Hattie Dell (Paul) Benschoter was the daughter of Rayburn K. and Mary Ann (Moler) Paul. Rayburn was born in Ohio but had lived in Jasper County, Missouri, since 1850 or earlier, and Mary Ann was born in Indiana, but by 1850 her family had moved to Nodaway county in Missouri, where she and Rayburn were married in 1864 during the Civil War. After they married, they lived in Kansas for a while, then by 1866 had moved to Jasper County in Missouri, where Hattie was born and they would remain.

Hattie's siblings were: Clora Belle (Anderson) 1866 – 1940 , William L (who married Alva Vernoy Benschoter's sister Anna Adelia) 1871 – 1958, Ora Alice (Grisham) 1876 – 1950 , and Artie May (Gaither) 1880 – 1966. Hattie was the middle child.

Hattie fell in love with Vernie Benschoter, and they married in 1893. Hattie always looked so young. In fact, her brother Will testified that she was over the age of 18 to aid in securing her marriage license.

After Hattie's marriage to Vernie, they made their home on a farm in Jasper County. Their first child, Rena, died at age 15 months, and their daughter Lela died shortly after giving birth to her second child. Their other three children--Edward, Virgie, and Melvin--would lead full, adult lives.

With a happy, devoted marriage, and well-loved by not only her own family, but also by the Benschoter family, Hattie saw much joy in her life as well as sadness. Her life came to an end much too soon, only nine brief years after her daughter Lela's death.
