Retired crane operator was Korean War vet

Royal C. "Sonny" Haines, 74, of Canonsburg, died at 9:05 a.m. Wednesday, August 20, 2003.

He was born November 2, 1928, in Sherman, N.Y., a son of Emory and Elsie Powers Haines.

Mr. Haines was a member of St. Patrick Church in Canonsburg.

He was a graduate of Chartiers High School and served in the U.S. Army in Company C, 5th Regiment, in Korea during the Korean War.

Prior to retirement, Mr. Haines was a crane operator at the former Fort Pitt Bridge Works in Canonsburg for 30 years.

He was a member of American Legion Post 902 of Houston and Labor Temple of Canonsburg.

On October 8, 1955, in St. Patrick Church in Canonsburg, he married Rose Angela Ortuso, who survives.

Also surviving are a son, James Vincent Haines of Canonsburg; a daughter, Sandra Lee Petrick of Houston; two brothers, John and Jack Haines, both of Canonsburg; a grandson, James Petrick; and many nieces and nephews.

A sister, Ella Mae Anderson, is deceased.

HAINES – Friends of Royal C. "Sonny" Haines of Canonsburg, who died Wednesday, August 20, 2003, will be received from 8:45 until 9:45 a.m. Friday, August 22, in Salandra Funeral Service, 304 West Pike Street, Canonsburg, followed at 10 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Patrick Worship Site of St. Patrick Church, Canonsburg. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Gardens Cemetery, McMurray. Full military rites will be accorded by the honor guards of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 191 of Canonsburg and American Legion Post 902 of Houston. www.woodrufffamilyservices.com.
