William was the youngest son of James Bowen and Elizabeth Robert. They married in 1812. James was a tenant farmer at Clegyrboia, a farm just outside of St. Davids. The original farmhouse is still standing and is currently used as a vacation rental. William married Mary Lewis (b. 1816 , recorded as 1818 in some records) on May 17, 1850 in the St. David's Cathedral. She was the daughter of Stephen Lewis, a master mariner and his wife, Mary Bowen. William was a cattle dealer or drover. He and Mary had James. b.1851, Essex, b. 1852, Andrew b.1854, and Andrew b. 1856 (both died as babies), Letitia b.1857, Mary Ann b.1859 and Andrew b. 1862. Mary died soon after Andrew's birth in 1862. William remarried in 1864 (new wife was Martha Thomas) and had 8 more children. William has two large memorial stones in the St. David's cemetery, one for each wife.
