She married "Leon" Leonardus Jerome Van Damme on 2 Nov 1917 in Roeselare, Belgium. She immigrated to America via Ellis Island in New York from Roeselare, Belgium with her husband and their two oldest daughters, Alida and Madeleine on 21 Aug 1921.
She made delicious home-made raisin bread and white bread for her family. She mainly spoke Flemish and some English. At one time three of her daughters (Alida, Bertha and Annie) all lived within two blocks of each other in East Moline, Illinois. Her other daughter, Madeleine (VanDamme) VerKinderen lived in Mankato, Minnesota. I taught my grandmother how to play solitare and her and I played many, many times. She usually could be found sitting in her rocking chair on her porch at 1511 - 12th Avenue in East Moline, Illinois.
Together, Eliza and Leon had four beautiful daughters: Alida (Bernard) Rossi, Madeleine (Lucien) VerKinderen, Bertha (Benjamin) Womack and Anna (George) Miller. Eliza had one sister, Emma Maria DeSwarte (who married Charles Soenen); two brothers, Constant Camille DeSwarte and Alfons Jozef DeSwarte (who married Barbara Donck), all of Belgium.
Eliza is buried in St. Mary's Cemetery in East Moline, Il.
