John Allender was from Westmoreland County Pennsylvania and was the son of Edward Allender of Maryland and Margaret Crawford of Pennsylvania. John married Minerva Jane Young in 1839 in Ohio. The 1840 Federal Census shows them in Salem, Ohio. In 1844 he has moved to Van Buren County Iowa and engaged in his father's occupation of running a mill with his brother George. Through the 1850's they live in Iowa. However by 1865 they are living in Nevada where their daughter Hattie is born. Sometime after this, the Allenders move to Rio Vista, California. The 1870 Federal Census shows Minerva living alone with her children there.

John Allender died of heart problems in 1870. His gravestone inscription reads
"A heart of heavenly purity
