Aurelius Josiah "A. J." Terry was born about 1828 in Hinds County, Mississippi, son of Joseph R. and Sarah Smith Terry. The family moved to Texas when he was a very young boy. Aurelius Terry was a private in Walker's Company of Texas Mounted Rangers in the Mexican War, mustering in on June 9, 1846 and mustering out on July 16, 1846. He was also listed in Ballowe's Company of the First Texas Mounted Rifle Volunteers. During the Mexican War, soldiers enlisted for a short time, returned home and re-enlisted later when they were needed elsewhere. In 1850, Terry was 22, living in the Brazoria County household of his older brother Frank Terry, 29 with brothers, David, 25, and Clinton, 20. In 1852, A. J., David and Clinton Terry bought 700 acres of land for $10,000. He remained in partnership with his brother Clinton and their plantation was mentioned in Clinton's 1861 will. Aurelius Terry married Winifred Manadue on June 17, 1853 in Harris County, Texas. Their children were sons Clinton and Aurelius.

A. J. Terry also served the Confederacy in the 16th Brigade of the Texas State Troops. He was listed as 34 years old, and was Captain and Commanding Officer of the Coast Guards for Brazoria County, enlisting on May 2, 1862.

Following Winifred's death in 1862, Aurelius Terry married Lucy A. Gautier on December 15, 1864, the sister of his brother Clinton's wife. His tombstone inscription states that he died in Houston in 1869, and the circumstances of his death remain a mystery. Probate records in Brazoria County show that he was deceased before February 25, 1869, and no mention of his death was found in Houston newspapers during January and February of 1869.
