JOHN ALFORD, 61, DIES ON VACATION

John H. Alford, 61, 622 Harrison St., died Friday morning at Evergreen Resort, Phelps, Wis., where he was vacationing with his family.

Mr. Alford was born Nov. 15, 1897, at Pendleton and was the son of Harvey [sic] and Emily Alford. He spent most of his life in this vicinity. Mr. Alford was a machine operator at the Delco-Remy Division.

Surviving are: the widow, Alta Marie; three sons, Robert W. Alford, Chesterfield; Jack Alford, Alexandria; and Jerry D. Alford, Anderson; three daughters, Mrs. Leslie Adames and Mrs. Edgar Nutt, both of Anderson, and Mrs. Dean Lindsey, Wichita, Kan.; 17 grandchildren; a brother, Ralph Alford, Pendleton, and a sister, Mrs. Mary Thomas, Indianapolis.

The body will be brought to the Baker Brothers Funeral Home in Anderson. Funeral arrangements have not been completed.

The birth year on his gravestone is probably incorrect. On John Harvey Allford's 1918 WWI Draft Registration Card (Ancestry.com), he said he was born 15 Nov 1897. He is age 2, born Nov 1897, on the 1900 census.
