Sudden Death of N. W. Hicks
The unexpected news of the sudden death of N. W. Hicks was received with sincere sorrow by his many friends in Alexandria last Wednesday afternoon. Mr. Hicks was home Sunday and apparently in good health. He left Monday morning for his usual trip on the road and altho not feeling as well as usual, attended to his regular duties. Soon after reaching Grand Forks, N. D., he became seriously ill and a doctor was summoned. The trouble was diagnosed as being an acute case of appendicitis and an operation was deemed necessary at once. Pertonitis had developed to such a stage the patient grew worse rapidly and only rallied slightly from the operation. He died at four o'clock Wednesday afternoon. Upon receiving the message of her husband's serious condition, Mrs. Hicks, accompanied by her sister-in-law Mrs. Cleve Hicks, left on the afternoon flyer but arrived serveral hours too late.
The remains were brought at once to Alexandria, Mr. and Mrs. Miles Stricker of Grand Forks accompanying the sorrowing wife and Mrs. Cleve Hicks on their sad journey. The funeral was held from the house Saturday afternoon, the simple prayer service of the Congregational church being read by Rev. Secord. Interment was made in Kinkead Cemetery. A brother, Cleve Hicks, arrived just in time for the funeral. Other relatives and friends present from away are a son, Edward, and Mrs. Lamborn, of Minneapolis, Mrs. Fortner and Mr. and Mrs. Miles Stricker of Grand Forks, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Fredenburg, Minneapolis, Mr. Whitman, Fergus Falls, Mrs. Van Loon, Monticello, and Mr. and Mrs. Roberts of Maple Grove. The flower offering were simply magnificent speaking plainer than words of the high esteem in which he was held by his numerous friends.
Norman Woodhull Hicks was born in Alexandria, Sept 6, 1867 and was the second son of Mrs. Thressa T. Hicks and the late Wm. T. Hicks of this city. He attended the public school here and also took two years of training at the naval academy at Annapolis. He was married in 1893 to Mrs. Aneita (Onata) Schaefer who died in 1900, leaving a little son Edward. In 1904 Mr. Hicks was married to Mrs. Florence Stokes Emery who with two little boys are left to mourn the death of an affectionate husband and father. He also leaves an aged mother and brother Cleve.
