Born April 20, 1930, in Whiteville, NC, he was the of the late Henry Haynes and Bertie Lee Long Cumbee.
Bernie attended North Carolina School for the Deaf in Morganton, NC.
He retired from the Post and Courier in Charleston, SC, after 33 years of service, and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include daughters, Joyce Womick and husband Paul of Spartanburg, SC, and Barbara Curtis and husband Bruce of St. Augustine, FL; son, Ricky Cumbee and wife Tammy of Charleston, SC; nine grandchildren; and fourteen great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00 PM, September 20, 2012, in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Spartanburg, SC, conducted by the Rev. Jack Bratton, Sr.
