Nonagenarian had worked in textile industry
Martha E. Slusser Augustine Bankus, 93, died at 3:20 a.m. Monday, Sept. 17, 2012, in Berwick Retirement Village I, residing there for the past five days. She previously lived with her daughter Patricia for the past six to seven years. Prior to that, she was a resident of 204 E. Seventh St., Mifflinville.
Born in rural Nescopeck on June 25, 1919, she was a daughter of the late Samuel P. and Bertha I. Linn Slusser.
Martha worked at several sewing/knitting mills in the area over her lifetime. She was always a wonderful homemaker.
She was preceded in death by husband Melvin H.L. Augustine and second husband Fred Bankus, as well as nine siblings.
Martha was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Mifflinville. She attended regularly over most of her life.
Remaining to cherish her memory are daughter Patricia A. Augustine Leiby and husband E. Jay Leiby; grandson Christopher Leiby and wife Denise Bellum Leiby and granddaughters Latisha Marie and Latia Marie; grandson Melvin Leiby and wife Gina Sacco Leiby and grandchildren Rachael and Thomas, and twin sister Mary M. Slusser Sponenberg.
A memorial dinner and service will be held at the St. John's Lutheran Church, Mifflinville, on Thursday at 2 p.m. with her pastor, the Rev. Joshua L. Reinsburrow, officiating.
Interment will be held at the convenience of the family at Elan Memorial Park.
Donations may be made to the memorial fund of the church or flowers may be sent to the church.
