Mary M. Sponenberg
Had worked at Berwick Vegetable Co-op
Mary Magdalene (Slusser) Sponenberg, 93, formerly of Spring Garden Avenue, Berwick, died early Friday morning, Jan. 4, 2013, at Maria Hall, Danville.
Born on June 25, 1919, in Beaver Township, she was a daughter of the late Samuel P. Slusser and Bertha I. (Linn) Slusser. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee A. Sponenberg, on March 11, 1995.
Mrs. Sponenberg had worked at the former Berwick Vegetable Co-Op and also for Penngora Knitting Mills.
She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church of Mifflinville.
Her hobbies included playing bingo, crafts, camping, cooking and baking. She and her late husband also enjoyed spending the winters in Florida.
Surviving are her two sons: Richard E. Sponenberg and his wife, Judith, Dale A. Sponenberg and his wife, Patricia, and a daughter-in-law, Vera Sponenberg, all of Berwick.
Also surviving are numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was the last surviving member of her family, being preceded in death by 10 siblings.
In addition to her husband, Lee, she was preceded in death by a son, Elmer Sponenberg, on June 24, 2008.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, at 11 a.m. at the McMichael-Rairigh and Baker Funeral Home, Inc., 119-121 E. Third St., Berwick, with the Rev. Joshua L. Reinsburrow, her pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Lawn Cemetery, Berwick. A viewing will be held Monday morning from 10 until the time of the service at 11.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the Alzheimer's Association, Wilkes-Barre.
