William Nicholas "Nick" Beverage, 94, of Monterey, died Saturday, March 14, 2009 at his home. He was born May 7, 1914, a son of Isaac Luther and Clara Hester Seybert Beverage
Mr. Beverage studied at the University of Virginia and then returned to Monterey, where he was the county surveyor and a member of the Monterey Lions Club for several years. He moved to Newport News and worked for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Fort Eustis from 1943 to 1978, retiring as the director of engineering.
In Newport News, he was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church and a consultant for Horne Brothers Engineering.
In 1979 he returned to Highland County and enjoyed farming, gardening, surveying and traveling to see his family, including trips to the Far East.
He was a member of Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, Mill Gap Ruritan Club, past president and manager of Monterey Cemetery, past coordinator for Highland County Emergency Services, a volunteer for the Highland County Fair and one of the foremost historians of Highland County.
