Doct. John Rainey died on Wednesday morning about 4 o'clock, Burried the same day on May the 4th, 1892., CLARKSVILLE TIMES, Thursday 1 Jun 1899, from microfilm in the Clarksville Library, Reel 2002-1: COMPANY H -- This company was organized in Clarksville, and became of part of what was known as Whitfield's Legion. It was brigaded with several other Texas regiments, and Whitfield commanded it for a long time as brigadier, and on his retirement, he was succeeded by Gen. Sul Ross who was in command at the time of the surrender. The company as first organized was as follows, as far as I can recollect, but there are names that I cannot recall: Jack Rainey, died in this county. (more), CLARKSVILLE NEWS Thursday 1 Jun 1899, from microfilm in the Clarksville Library, Reel 2002-1: COMPANY E -- The men who composed this company were the first to respond from Red River County to the South's call to arms. It was organized as an infantry, in April, 1861, almost before Sumpter's guns had ceased to reverbrate. The muster roll, as well I can remember, had upon it the following names, but there are some that I cannot now recall, Jack Rainey died here in '99 (more), MARRIAGE: John W. Rainey married Elizabeth Robbins on 22 Nov 1865 in RRCo TX Book T page 392. From Civil War Veterans buried or dying in Red River County, Texas by Lawrence and Sue Dale.
"John W. Rainey was Acting Assistant Surgeon (A.A.S.) upon mustering in to Confederate States service. Appointed Surgeon at reorganization. Was rejected by the Medical Board, so was assigned to duty as Assistant Surgeon. Was absent, sick in November and December of 1862, but was present for duty on the remaining muster rolls. Usually signed disability certificates and receipts as either Surgeon or Assistant Surgeon. He signed papers as Surgeon and A. A. S. from July 1863." Married Elizabeth Robbins about 1865 and raised a family and practiced medicine in Clarksville, Red River County, Texas.
