Fredrick Diehl, founder/owner of Fred Diehl Motors

Fredrick C. Diehl, 81, of Elizabeth Street, Clearfield, and most recently a resident of DuBois Village, died Thursday, July 3,1997, at DuBois Nursing Home.

Born July 17, 1915, in Bells Landing, he was a son of the late Frank and Mabel (Johnson) Diehl.

Following graduation from Mahaffey High School, Mr. Diehl spent most of his career in the automotive industry. He was formerly employed by Dotts Motors, the former Riverside Motors and the Nash dealership, all in Clearfield.

In 1951, he opened Fred Diehl Motors in Clearfield, selling Nash automobiles and later Jeep products until 1955 when he acquired the Chevrolet dealership.

Mr. Diehl retired in January 1974.

He was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Clearfield; Clearfield/Curwensville Country Club; United Commercial Travelers, Philipsburg Council No. 621; and Clearfield Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge No. 97; and a lifetime member of Clearfield BPO Elks Lodge No. 540.

Mr. Diehl was also a member of Clearfield Fraternal Order of the Eagles Aerie No. 812, by whom he was named Eagle of the Year; a member and past president of Clearfield Lions Club; and a member of Free and Accepted Masons, Clearfield Lodge No. 340; the Shriners and Tall Cedars of Lebanon.

He was a former member and past president of the Clearfield Hospital board, during which time he led the fund drive for the new wing at the hospital and was also very active in recruiting doctors for the hospital.

Due to his commitment to the hospital, he was the recipient of the Benjamin Rush Award given by the Clearfield Medical Society.

He was a member of The Gourmet Club and of the Greenwood
Club.

On Nov. 19, 1937, in Curwensville, he wed Mary Kephart who survives along with their four children, Mrs. Kenneth (Betsy) Long, Mary Sue Diehl, Nan Sennett and Fred W., all of Clearfield; seven grandchildren, Kathy Herman, Mary Beth Long, Christina Powell, Thad Diehl, Michael Sennett, Katie Diehl and Joshua Diehl; three great-grandchildren; a sister and a brother, Jane Fruit and F. Thomas, both of Clearwater, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition, he was preceded in death by these siblings, Josephine Spencer, Edith Diehl, Percy, Martha McKee and Mayme Young.

Funeral services will be held at the Kevin A. Beardsley Funeral Home Inc., Clearfield, on Monday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Brian D. Vasey officiating.

Interment will follow at Crown Crest Memorial Park, Hyde.

Friends will be received at the funeral home on Sunday from 7-9 p.m. and on Monday until the hour of the services.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Clearfield Foundation for Health, PO Box 992, Clearfield, or to a charity of one's choice.
