Joseph Beard (1750-1813) turned out at the Lexington Alarm, serving as corporal in Capt. Elisha Jackson's company, Col. Asa Whitcomb's regiment. He was born in Reading, Mass.; died in Barre, VT. Beard, Joseph, s. of Andrew and Elizabeth (Nichols) Beard, was b. in Reading, 1748. His f. rem. ab. 1772 to W., settling in the S. W. part of the tn. near the present village of So. Gardner, where he d. in 1813. The s. soon after m. Susannah Hartshorn of Lunenburg, and on May 19, 1777, bought lot 41, 3d Div., located on the back rd. to Gr. near the former Elisha Pierce place, and set. upon it. Little is known of this fam. In 1804 Joseph and Susannah sold the farm to sons, Joseph and Cleveland, and they in turn the following yr. to Elisha Pierce, at which date the entire fam. disappears from the tn.'s annals and from the knowledge of the writer. (From the history and Town Records of Westminster MA).Four of Joseph and Susannah (Hartshorn) Beard's children moved to nearby Orange, VT in 1800. (Joseph Jr., Cleveland, John Hartshorn and Hannah). Joseph probably died here while visiting his children in nearby Orange. His wife, Susannah H. Beard, a year later married John Pierce back in Westminster, MA.
