Henry J. was born in Marienhof, parish of Jordenstorf, Mecklenburg-Schwerin Germany. He was the son of Ludwig Bastian, a shepherd, and Sophia nee Schlorf. He was christened "Heinrich Friedrich Johann" at the church at Jordenstorf on April 20, 1831.

The marriage of Henry J. to Friederike Becker on October 24, 1861 is recorded at the Jordenstorf church. Henry was a shepherd at Sukow, Mecklenburg-Schwerin.

CALLED BY DEATH
BASTIAN--Henry J. Bastian died at his home in the Town of Brillion yesterday at the age of 82 years. Decedent was born in Germany. He came to America with his family in the year 1880 and settled on the present homestead. Decedent is preceded in death by his wife, and four sons and three daughters survive him. The sons are Martin, Fred, Ernest and Henry. The daughters are Mrs. John Tamm, Mrs. J.D. Smith and Mrs. C.F. Koch. One brother, Fred Bastian, Sr., and three sisters also survive. The sisters are Mrs. J. Leverenz of Sheboygan, Mrs. Nemoede of Chicago and Mrs. Wm. Schmidt of Kansas. He was a member of the Ger. M.E. Church, and the funeral will be held next Sunday, usual church services being suspended for that day to permit of funeral services for the departed. The funeral cortege will leave the house at 12:30 p.m. and proceed to the church where the services will be conducted by Rev. Wm. Elske.
