He was one of six children born to Naham L. and Ellen Bates, whom have all preceded him in death.
His early childhood was spend on the farm where he was born. He later attended Business College at Oelwein, Iowa and on Feb. 28, 1903 was united in marriage to Rosa L. Bigelow of Hazleton, Ia.
Following their marriage they moved to Lamont where Mr. Bates served as rural mail carrier for 33 years.
He passed away Friday, Nov. 17, 1950 in Saint Joseph's Mercy Hospital, Mason City, Iowa at the age of 71 years, 4 mos, and 25 days.
Surviving are his wife and his only daughter, Mrs. Harold Myrton of Mason City, Iowa.
Burial was in Campton cemetery.
