Monmouth Review of 29 August 1911

J. Knox Porter, one of the best known residents of the Maple City, passed away at his home on South A. Street at a little after 2 o?clock this afternoon as the result of wounds received in an automobile accident on July 30. Death had been expected for the past two days as the attending physicians had given the family little encouragement for his recovery.
With Mrs. Porter and their daughter, Miss Nelle Porter, and two members of the Boggs family, Mr. Porter was injured when an auto in which the party was riding was struck by an Iowa Central train. Among other injuries received, he had a serious wound on one of his legs just below the knee. An artery was severed and this refused to heal. THe wound grew gradually more seroius and hemorrhages have occurred for the past ten days. A serious hemmorhage occurred this morning and another this afternoon, ending his life. His three children and his wife were at his bedside, Evan Porter having arrived Sunday from his home in Fresno, California, called by his illness.
The deceased was born 19 January 1848, in Huntingdon county, Pennsylvania. With his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R.W. Porter, he came west to Sumner township in 1854. He married Miss Mary T. Chandler 11 December 1873 and moved into Monmouth in 1875. He had lived there ever since with the exception of six years spent in Colorado. He had united with the Presbyterian church of Norwood in his youth and transferred his membership to the Monmouth church. He was the father of three, they and his wife survived him. Captain M.C. Porter, then circuit clerk, Evan D. Porter of Fresno, California and Miss Nelle Porter of Monmouth. His funeral was conducted by Reverend Clinton J. Greene of the Presbyterian church, assisted by Dr. J.A. Burnett of the First United Presbyterian church and burial was in the Glendale cemetery.
Pallbearers were the five brother-in-laws and a cousin, as follows; Seth Chandler, Deaton; Homer Chandler, Ottumwa; J.A. Boggs, Alexis; J.G. Watt, Alexis; J.W. Brook, Stronghurst; and T.D. Likely, Alexis.
