Johann "John" Zupan was born in Spodnje Gorje, the largest village in what is now the Municipality of Gorje, in the Gorenjska (Upper Carniola) region of Slovenia, the third of nine children born to Georg Zupan (Supan) & Ursula Kunsic.

John immegrated to the United States in 1879 and settled in Stearns County, Minnesota. On June 1, 1879, he married Helena "Lena" Simnic,* (whose family also came from the Gorenjska region)at St. Stephan's church in Brockway Township, Stearns County, Minnesota. Witnesses were John's brother, Andreas Supan & his future wife, Rosalia Semlja.

John & Helena had 8 children; 6 sons: John, Frank, Martin, Lawrence, George & Jakob; and 2 daughters, Lena and Mary. Helena died just 4 months after giving birth to their last child, their son Jakob, who died a month before his 4th birthday.

*Helena's maiden name has been spelled a number of ways, including Simnic and Schimnitsch.

John's surname appears to have originally been spelled Supan, but he changed the spelling to Zupan at some point after arriving in the united states, and it is that spelling that appears on his headstone.

One of John's sons (John Jr.) changed the spelling of his name to Zupon.

John's brother Andreas maintained the spelling of the family name as Supan, while two of Andreas's six sons later adopted the Zupan spelling.

John & Andreas's brother Lorenc changed the spelling of the name to Zuppan.
