Son of Peter and Mary Bard; he was also known as Pierre Nazuire Barde in French-Canadian records.

On 25 Mar 1858 Peter Bard Jr., 22, married Marietta Cressey, 19, daughter of Jason Cressey and Louisa Wheeler, at North Adams, Berkshire County, Massachusetts, in a first marriage for both.

Starting 21 Jun 1861, Peter served in the 10th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, Company H, ending his service by transfer to the Navy on 18 Feb 1862. He was discharged, having served on the U. S. S. Cinncinatti and the U. S. S. Clara Dolsen, with the rank of Seaman on 9 Dec 1862.

In 1863 he was living at Shelburne, Massachusetts, and on 28 Jul 1863 he mustered into service with Company A, of the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, being credited to the quota of Buckland, Massachusetts. He was 28 years and 3 months old.

On 22 Jun 1864 Peter was taken prisoner at Petersburg, Prince George County, Virginia, and on 27 Jul 1864 he was administratively transferred to the 20th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, while absent as a Prisoner of War.

On 11 Nov 1866 Marietta Cressey, his wife, died at Hawley, Franklin County, Massachusetts, at age 27 of disease of lungs; and on 2 May 1867, Peter married second Amelia C. Bohmer, 22, daughter of Frederick Boehmer and Elizabeth C. Rundle, at Halifax, Vermont.

On 16 Feb 1871 Amelia C. Bohmer, his wife, died at Greenfield, Franklin County, Massachusetts, at age 26; and on 30 Jun 1874 Peter married third, to Jane Cooper, 22, daughter of William Cooper and Maria, at Westfield, Massachusetts, his third marriage and her first. They had five children.
