Born in Tymowa 47, a small town not far from Tarnow. Baptized 15 December 1881, at St. Mikolaj Church, Tymowa, Poland. The sponsors were Casimerus Korik and Catharina Plewa.

Immigrated 3 July 1906, Ellis Island. Married Maria Janczycki on 17 November 1907, in Scarbro, West Virginia.

The growing family moved to Pana, Illinois; Clinton, Indiana; Terra Haute, Indiana, and finally Mishawaka, Indiana. John worked as a coal miner, ran a family grocery store, worked as a baker for the University of Notre Dame, and in rubber work for the Ball Band plant.

In 1923, John got into trouble with the law the same day he was granted his citizenship for illegal alcohol manufacturing. He took the alias "James Brown" for a return visit to West Virginia about 1930 in support of the Union for Coal Miners. He spoke Polish, German, Russian, some French & English, and was said to have been in the Austrian Army. John had blue eyes, and brown hair.
