Edna was raised in Glens Falls, N.Y., graduating from Glens Falls High School in 1945. She received a B.S. degree in English and Theatre Education from Syracuse University in 1949 and taught for a year in Gouverneur, N.Y.
In 1950 she married Earl Ackley and moved to Syracuse, N.Y., where they began their family and she worked as a substitute teacher. In 1957, Edna and Earl moved to Lynchburg where she continued to substitute teach while earning her Master of Arts in Teaching from Lynchburg College in 1969. She then began a 17-year career teaching in the Lynchburg Public Schools, first at Robert S. Payne Elementary School and then at Sandusky Middle School.
Following their retirement, Edna and Earl moved to Smith Mountain Lake and then Indiantown, Fla.
