He played college basketball at Syracuse University and later played professional basketball for a year. He worked for 30 years as a purchasing manager for General Electric in Lynchburg.
He is survived by his children, Jim Ackley of Lynchburg, Robert Ackley of Sunset, SC, Beth Heatwole of Richmond, VA & Jody Morgan of Roseland, VA, brother, William Ackley of Big Bear Lake, CA, 13 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Edna Oldham Ackley, and brothers, Willard & Will Ackley.
SERVICES: A memorial service will be at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Lynchburg, at a later date.
