Susie Yazzie James passed peacefully on Sunday, June 3, 2007 in Avondale, Ariz. She was born on Sept. 15, 1926, in Coppermine into the Kii'yaa'aanii clan for the Nakai Dineh clan.

Her endless strength and passionate individualism is a legacy she left for her family and friends. Susie was one of the first pioneers to cultivate the Lake Powell region in the early 1960s. She was an avid weaver with impeccable skills and timeless rugs. She was always willing to provide assistance to her family and closest friends. Her intoxicating smiles, gracious hospitality and vintage Navajo livelihood will truly be missed.

Susie is survived by her husband, Joe James; her devoted children, Jane Daniels and Leonard James, both of Phoenix; grandchildren Marilyn Neztsosie, Harold Neztsosie, Cordell and Kaylena James, all of Page, Terry Neztsosie of Yuma, Ariz., Harry Neztsosie Jr. of Sacramento, Calif., Calvin Neztsosie of Seattle, Jaimmie Daniels of Mesa, Ariz., and Charmayne Daniels of Phoenix; 10 great-grandchildren; sisters Lillie Neztsosie of Salt Lake City and Sallie Barber of Fredonia; and brother Sam Yazzie of Page. She was preceded in death by her son, Harry Neztsosie Sr.; first husband Neil Neztsosie; brothers Joe Begay and Salis Yazzie; and parents Nakai and Lucy Yazzie.

Memorial services will be held in Page on June 8, 2007, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel on Lake Powell Boulevard.
