William Wilbur Hanlin, third of seven children of Robert M. (as recorded on the death certificate, Grandma Hanlin was the informant, M probably stands for Moses) and Margaret Ann Hanlin, was born at Gallopolis, Gallin Co., (Gallia) Ohio, September 22, 1878. (It is more likely that he was born in Harrison Township where his parents lived, near Gallipolis.) (Death certificate records his birthday as September 27, 1878.) He died at Geneva, Neb., February 18, 1935, aged 56 years, 4 months and 26 days.(Death certificate records 56 years, 4 months 21 days. According to this he was born on September 28, 1878.)
In 1904 both his parents died within a week and soon after Wilbur and a brother and sister left the Ohio home for Nebraska, coming to Geneva. For a number of years he and his brother were in the restaurant business at Geneva which he discontinued and left for Montana in 1915. January 16, 1918, he was married to Miss Mae Goeury of Geneva, taking his bride immediatley to his Montana home, where they resided until 1920 when they returned to Geneva and took up their residence on the Crosby Johnson farm southwest of town about five miles, where they have since resided.
Mr. and Mrs. Hanlin were the parents of eight children, three of whom died in infancy. Margaret, fifteen, a junior in the Geneva high school, Eugene, thirteen, James, six, John, three, and little Ruth Ann, eight months old, survive their father.
In addition to his bereaved wife and children, the deceased leaves three sisters and one brother. The sisters are Mrs. Cora Parker of Parkersburg, W. V., Mrs. Kate Weis of Gillette, Wyo., Mrs. Lottie Coleman of Geneva and the brother is R. F. Hanlin of Beatrice, Neb.
During most of his life, Mr. Hanlin was rugged and well, but within the last year his friends noticed that he was losing some of his usual vigor. Several weeks ago he suffered an attack of flu which finally sent him to his bed Wednesday, February 13. A bad case of pneumonia soon developed which terminated his life in five short days.
Mr. Hanlin was a quiet, unassuming man whose life interest centered chiefly in his family. What he did, he did with the thought of the comfort and welfare of the members of his family in mind. This interest led him naturally to an interest in community and he had been for a number of years a member of the board of education in his home district.
He was hard working and dependable and was held in high esteem by his neighbors, the deepest sympathy of whom go out to Mrs. Hanlin and her family in their great sorrow and loss.
Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon. Brief services will be held at the home at 1:30. Services proper will be held at the Geneva Methodist church at 2:30, with the pastor, Rev. W.H. Shoaf, in charge The pastor's remarks will be based upon the twenty-third Psalm at the request of Mrs. Hanlin, who also suggested the hymns to be used: "Going Down the Valley," "Rock of Ages," and "Nearer My God To Thee.: Burial will be at the Geneva cemetery.
