Son of John and Emma Lynn (Lear) Tankersley. He first married Stella Helton and they went on to have four children including Helen Tankersley Collett and Edward Tankersley and two sons who are still living. He also raised step-daughter Georgia Lee McDaniel from wife Stella's first marriage. Richard later married Mary Hargrove Hulett and went on to have another daughter. He was an impeccable craftsman and builder, and his work took him all over the country. He died at the age of 66 in Dayton Ohio shortly after his retirement.
