20-year-old Leonard joined Nov. 11, 1861 in Carrollton, Ill. He was 5’ 9”, dark haired with blue eyes and a light complexion. He was a farmer. He joined a regiment being formed by his father’s commander in the Mexican War, Colonel Jacob Fry. He served in the Illinois 61st Infantry, Co. C. and mustered in on Feb. 5, 1862 at Benton Barracks in Missouri. He was serving as a Corporal when he was killed at the battle of Shiloh on April 6, 1862.
