James C. Boston was enrolled as a private of Company A, 53rd Regiment of the Pennsylvania Veteran Volunteers, commanded by Captain Charles L. Geiger, as a substitute on September 1, 1864 at Scranton, Pa. and was mustered out on May 31, 1865 at Alexandria, Virginia. In his military records he is listed as a substitute for Elian B. Myers in one document and for Elien B. Boston in another. He had blue eyes, brown hair, dark complexion and was 5 feet 9 inches tall, and his occupation was a farmer. According to his military pension records he contracted a fever while on a march from Richmond to camp near Washington D.C. on or about May 1, 1865 which resulted in rheumatism which greatly disabled him for manual labor.
James and Elizabeth were married by Rev. Almer Harper on 10-Sep-1871 in Rockland Co., Illinois.
James and Elizabeth had five children: Mary Ann, George Lewis, Cora, Lurene and a girl that died as an infant.
James' death certificate lists the cause of his death as stomach cancer.
