The Roster and Record of Iowa Soldiers (1910) and other record indicate that David enlisted on August 9, 1862, in what would be Company H of the 21st Regiment of Iowa's volunteer infantry. The Company was mustered in on August 23, 1862, at Camp Franklin on Eagle Point in Dubuque and the Regiment on September 9, 1862, also at Camp Franklin. David was mustered out May 18, 1865, at Davenport while other original enlistees were mustered out July 15, 1865, at Baton Rouge.
