The Rev. Robert "Bob" L. Butcher, 82, passed away Sunday (March 18, 2007) at the Arbors at Fairmont Nursing Center.
He was born May 23, 1924, in Marion County, a son of the late Isaac Franklin Butcher and Madge Marie Harris Butcher.
The Rev. Butcher had been a nondenominational minister for 43 years.
In addition, he worked as a coal miner and as a self-employed coal truck driver. He was co-owner and operator of Butcher's Construction Company. He retired from the Owens-Illinois plant in Fairmont as a mechanic.
His ministry, and the souls he won for Christ, were his most important work. He had a great love for Christ and others.
Robert was multitalented: He built houses, was a wonderful carpenter, and worked on lawn mowers and cars. He took great joy in using his many talents to help others.
He also enjoyed being outdoors, camping, fishing and spending time with his family.
He is survived by a son, Thomas Edward "Ed" Butcher and his wife Linda of Fairmont; two daughters, Mary Louise Haught and her husband Ronald of Fairmont, and Wanda "Dot" Spencer and her husband Gary of Lakeville, Ohio; three brothers, Beverly Butcher of Fairmont, Bernard Butcher and his wife Wanda of Gallipolis, Ohio, and Verlin Butcher and his wife Roberta of Clintonville; a sister, Beatrice Kisner of Fairmont; five grandchildren, Roni Sue Haught Meluzio and her husband Tony, Edward Allen Butcher and his wife Beth, Lori Ann Butcher Whipps and her husband Donald, Matthew Edward Spencer and his wife Kim, and Stacy Lin Butcher Greaver and her husband Mike; five great-grandchildren, Alyssa Snyder, Deveny Ann Butcher, Taylor Ann Butcher, Donovan Whipps and Macy Kay Spencer; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Rev. Butcher was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie Pauline Goff Butcher, who died in 1974; a son, Robert "Bobby" E. Butcher; a brother-in-law, Sherman Kisner; a sister-in-law, Delcie Whitecotton Butcher; and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Emma and Charles C. Goff.
Friends may call from1-9 p.m. Tuesday and 9-11 a.m. Wednesday at the Carpenter & Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St., Fairmont. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with Pastor Jerry Monday officiating. Interment will follow at the Mt. Zion Cemetery.
