Joseph(AKA Matthews), enlisted for Civil War service as a private in Company H, 103rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment, July 25, 1862, at Cleveland, OH(Cuyahoga County) for a term of 3 years. Occupation: Miner. He died of typhoid pneumonia at Frankfort, KY, March 26, 1863. Originally buried at Frankfort, he was moved to Camp Nelson National Cemetery after the war.

His name is on Panel #15 in the Cuyahoga County Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, Public Square, Cleveland, OH. See www.soldiersandsailors.com.
