Henry Merriman Ray, son of Johnathan and Sarah Jane Ray, one of a family of 13 children, was born in Adams County, Indiana, April 14, 1856. At the age of 12 years he came with his family to Jackson County, Kansas, where he spent the greater part of his life. He was united in marriage to Mary A. Renfro December 26, 1891. To this union 8 children were born. Seven of whom are still living; four sons, Howard of Mayetta. Jesse of Dennison. Harry and Rosco of Topeka; three daughters, Mrs. Flora M. Stein.Mrs. Clara A. Hunter and Mrs. Henrietta F. Pursell, all of Topeka. His wife, Mary, and daughter Ethel preceded him in death.
Early in life he became a member of the United Brethren church. He was a lover of the old hymns.
Mr. Ray died October 22, 1945, at the Holton hospital at the age of 89 years 6 months and 8 days. Besides his living sons and daughters he is survived by one brother, E. W. Ray, of Delta, Colo., one half brother, Grant Ray of Califrornia, twenty-three grandchildren and eight great grandchildren and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held Thursday at the Mercer Funeral Home. Rev. F. Edward Carter of Nortonville offficiating. Music was furnished by Mrs. Elsie Kern and Mrs. Opal Thomas. Interment was in the Denison Cemetery. Pallbearers were Geo. Hanson, Earl Blumberg, Dale Hazenwood, Wm. Brown,.
