Spartanburg, S.C. - Mrs. Denise Davis "Poocat" Smith, 58, of 501 Dodd Lane, peacefully entered rest on Monday, August 20, 2012, at her home.

A native of Spartanburg County, she was the widow of William Smith, Jr. and the daughter of Marie Davis Moore and the late Willie Edward Davis, Sr.

She was predeceased by one sister, Ms. Monaree Yvette Davis of Spartanburg, S.C.

Mrs. Smith was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany, where she served on the Alter Guild, Mission Committee and as a church school teacher. Mrs. Smith was a 1972 graduate of Spartanburg High School, she attended Voorhees College and received a BA degree in Special Education from Bennett College. She attended Converse College, with 30 hours toward a master's degree in Special Education and completed additional graduate courses from the University of South Carolina-Spartanburg.
She was a member of Spartanburg Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., National Education Association, South Carolina Education Association and Spartanburg Association of Educators.
She taught at McCarthy-Teszler School for 34 years where she touched the lives of many children. She loved dancing and was an avid genealogist who loved connecting family members together.

Mrs. Smith leaves to cherish fond memories; two daughters, Dr. Vashonia Smith Campbell (BeAsker) of Snellville, Ga. and Karla Miller Wardlaw (Walter) of Spartanburg, S.C.; one son, William Smith, III of Spartanburg, S.C.; one granddaughter, Ayanah Johnson of Inman, S.C.; three brothers, Ibrahim Hanif, Sharone Davis, Jr., and her twin brother, Dennis Marvin Davis (Twelvia) all of Spartanburg, S.C.; six additional sisters-in-law, Edith Jackson, Doris Lynch, Wanda Smith all of Spartanburg, S.C., Billie Ann Moody (Clarence) of Greer, S.C., Margaret Tyson of Newark, N.J., and Teresa Nichols (Charles) of San Bernardino, Ca.; three aunts, Letha Davis Brown, Lucy Davis Steen, and Mae Frances Davis all of Spartanburg, S.C.; one great-aunt, Louise Black Cherry (Robert) of Mooresville, N.C.; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, August 25, 2012, at the Episcopal Church of the Advent, 141 Advent Street, Spartanburg, S.C. The Reverend Henry Tollison, Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in the Heritage Memorial Gardens, Moore, S.C.

The final rites, Omega Omega Service, for Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. will be held Friday, August 24, 2012, at 6:30 p.m. at The John Stinson Woodward Memorial Chapel. The sorority ceremony is open to the public.

The family will receive friends at the chapel from 7:30-8:30 p.m. following the sorority rites.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany, 121 Ernest Collins Avenue, Spartanburg, S.C.
