Pierre L. Schellens, Retired Coffee Importer; Dies at age 86; Leader in Groton Affairs.

Pierre Louis Schellens, a charter member of the New York Coffee Exchange and a retired coffee merchant, died at his home at 35 Broad Street, Groton at 4:45 o'clock this morning after a seven years' illness. He was 86 years old. He came to Groton 36 years ago after retiring from the coffee business at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and took up active public life in the borough. He was a member of the borough board of warden and burgesses and for many years was a water commissioner. He succeeded Frederick Bill as president of the Bill Memorial Library association. He was also treasurer of the Groton Visiting Nurse association and was active in Red Cross circles for many years. Mr. Schellens was born at Crefeld, Germany of German and Dutch parentage, and after being educated in Switzerland, was employed at Marseilles, France. At the time of Franco-Prussian War, he came to this county, then 19 years of age. His first wife, Annie Hillyer of Brooklyn, died of yellow fever shortly after their arrival in Brazil, where her husband was engaged in business as a coffee merchant. In 1885, Mr. Schellens married Mary Louise Avery in Groton and the two returned to Rio de Janeiro. They left Brazil in 1896 to spend two years in Germany and returned again to Groton to live in retirement. A distinguished figure in the borough, Mr. Schellens was known as a man of great kindness and integrity. Although he was interested in many organizations in Groton, he spent much of his time with the affairs of the water commissioners in the days when the borough water department was being developed. He is survived by his widow and four sons, Christopher A Schellens of Clifton, Mass., Pedro L. Schellens of Havana, Cuba, E. L. Schellens of Ridgewood, New Jersey, and George H. Schellens of Belgrade, Yugoslavia. A fifth son, Richard died in Groton about nine years ago. George Schellens, a brother resides in Iserlohn, Westphalia. Five grandchildren also survive.
