F.J. Shaw, 89, Pioneer Joliet Resident, Dies

Frederick J. Shaw, 89, a pioneer in the Joliet area, died Friday at his home in Troy Township following a brief illness.
Mr Shaw, with his two sons, Theodore R. and Richard J., operated the Shaw Trucking firm. Prior to that he had worked for the old Illinois Steel Co. for 47 years, retiring in 1937. In addition, he operated a restaurant and dance hall six miles west of Joliet on Route 6 from 1920 to 1930.
Born in a log cabin on east Cass street, he was the son of the late Isaac and Mary Shaw. He married the former Myrtle Spafford on July 2, 1897.
Mr. Shaw as a member of the Matteson Lodge No. 175, A.F. and A.M., Joliet Commandery No. 4 Knights Templar; the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, local 179, and the Troy Sportsman's club.
He was preceded in death by a son, Fred J. Jr., and a daughter, Mrs. Lola Belle Burke.
Survivors include his widow; three daughters, Mrs James H. (Hazel) Chandler and Mrs. Earl (Helen) Crabbe, Sr., both of Joliet, and Mrs Myrtle I. Shepley of Gary; the two sons; a brother Frank E. Shaw of Winter Haven, Fla., 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be from the Haley Funeral Home Monday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Jay Fernlund officiating. Burial will be in the Hills of Rest cemetery.
Friends may call after 2 p.m. today.
