Grand Rapids Eagle, March 1,1883, reprinted in Coopersville Observer Obituaries by Boersma.

The late John Rice, with his wife, came to the valley from New York, forty years ago, and after a brief sojourn in this city, moved to the town of Tallmadge, Ottawa County, where he resided on the 1-9th inst., except for a short time at Rockford in this (Kent) County. When the gold excitement broke out, about 1849, he went to California and was gone about two years.

At his home he was one of the main pillars and staunch men, nearly all the time filling one or more of the important affairs of his town. He was treasurer two years, supervisor thirteen years and justice of the peace 24 years, his last time expiring on the 4th of last July. As a supervisor he was energetic, efficient and persevering and during the war, by his efforts, every requisition was filled with hard draft. As a magistrate, his judgement was called good and demanded respect and was sucessfully used to settle many disputes withou suits as law.

He was in poor health during the last year of his life, confined to his room with asthma most of the time and at the final summmons passed away quietly and tranquilly.
