Published in the Piscataquis (ME) Observer 10 Mar 1864 p3: "DIED---In Calais, suddenly, on Thursday morning, while visiting a patient, Dr. Jon [sic] Holmes, aged 61 years. The Calais Herald says---He had been troubled some time with heart disease, which probably caused his death. Dr. Holmes was born in Oxford, Oxford County and was a brother-in-law of Vice President Hamlin. His kindness of heart, humane disposition, and unspeakable integrity have endeared him to the hearts of those with whom he had been brought in contact."

n the 1860 U.S. Census, Job Holmes, 60, born Maine, was living in Ward 4, Calais, Maine, with Vesta, 52; Agnes, 23; Annie L., 21; Ellen, 20; Frank R., 16; and Walter H., 6, all born in Maine.

In the 1850 U.S. Census, physician Job Holmes 50, born Maine, was living in Calais, Maine, with Vesta, 42;Agnes, 13; Anna L, 11; Ellen, 10; and Frank P., 6, all born in Maine; and laborer Anthony Loughlin, 42, born Ireland.

The second (owner of the cottage) was Dr. Cyrus Hamlin, older brother of Hannibal Hamlin, First Vice President under Abraham Lincoln. Cyrus and Job Holmes went to Maine Medical College at Bowdoin and graduated the same class. Cyrus, although active in church and banking affairs was not a well man so decided in 1846 to sell the house and practice to his now brother-in-law, for Job had married Cyrus's sister, Vesta. Dr. Holmes lived and practiced from the cottage until 1850 when he built a large house now known as the Holmestead, next door. For the next fourteen years he practiced out of the cottage while taking on an apprentice medical student, Charles E. Swan. After Swan graduated from medical school he joined Dr. Holmes and they both practiced from the Cottage for 16 years, until Dr. Holmes death in 1864. (History of Holmes Cottage)

While in Paris, in 1833, he married Vesta Hamlin, Cyrus Hamlin's sister. The couple moved to Calais the following year, where they purchased her brother's cottage. Six children were to follow; Agnes, Anna Livermore, Ellen 'Nellie' Vesta, Cyrus Hamlin, Frank Pierpont and Walter Hamlin. For the next fourteen years Holmes practiced out of the cottage while taking on an apprentice medical student, Charles Edward Swan, a brother of James Swan, the Texas colonist.
