January 10, 1924 – August 13, 2012
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing away of our Mother and Grandmother, Janina Szaniawska, on Monday, August 13, 2012 at the age of 88 years.
Janina was born to Maryja and Andrzei Szewczyk in Oszczow, Poland in 1924. She was a victim of World War II, having been taken with her family to Siberia, when she was a teenager. Through many years of hardships and trials, she eventually landed in England, where she met and married Charles Liston in 1950. They had two children. Charles tragically passed away in 1966. Janina then went to work on the assembly line at General Electric Co. in Coventry, England until she retired in 1980. She had married Antoni Szaniawski in 1974, who passed away in 1999. Janina, with her daughter and her family, immigrated to Canada in 2003 to join her son and his family. She loved gardening, and for years grew prize-winning roses in Coventry. Even with the difference in climate in Calgary, she always managed to have beautiful flowers!
She is survived by her son George (Irene) Liston and their son Tim of Priddis; her daughter Monica (Mariusz) Kotarba and their children Daniel and Jessica of Calgary; her nephew Richard Keber of Coventry, England; and a few relatives of her first husband's, who still live in Poland, and also in Vancouver, BC; as well as numerous friends in the Calgary area and some long-time friends who are still in England.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady Queen of Peace Polish Catholic Church (2111 Uxbridge Drive N.W.) on Friday, August 17, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. Graveside Service to follow at a later date in Coventry, England. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to The Alzheimer Society of Calgary, Suite 201, 222 – 58th Avenue S.W., Calgary, AB T2H 2S3, Telephone: (403)290-0110, www.alzheimercalgary.com. Their flower is the Forget-me-not … plant some for Mum! The family would like to extend our thanks and gratitude for the care given to our Mother and Grandmother in the last years of her life, to the staff and volunteers at McKenzie Towne Care Centre. She loved to cook (you could always find her in the kitchen) so we are particularly grateful for the "Breakfast Club" while she could participate. Also, we appreciate those who attended to her to get her to weekly Mass and to get her ready to take the Handibus for outings and visiting while she was able.
"The Garden of a Mother's Love is Forever in Bloom!"
In living memory of Janina Szaniawska, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek Chapel, 14441 BANNISTER ROAD S.E. Telephone: (403) 256-9575.
