OBITUARY FROM THE ADVOCATE

BANISTER, D. ROSS

A retired attorney in the legal section of the Louisiana Department of Highways, with 30 years of service, and longtime resident of Baton Rouge, he died Thursday, Sept. 26, 1996, at Regency Place Care Center. He was born in Vixen and was a former longtime resident of Monroe. He was a veteran of World War II, having served as a communications officer in the Pacific. Visiting at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government St., 11 a.m. until religious services at 2 p.m. Saturday, conducted by the Rev. Sam B. Laine of Broadmoor Presbyterian Church. Interment in Greenoaks Memorial Park. Survived by wife of 57 years, Mary Hilburn Banister; two daughters, Nancy B. Holdeman and Troy Mellon; a son-in-law, Robert S. Mellon; two granddaughters, Karen Holdeman Tellez and Marty Harriet Neill Hebeisen; four grandsons, Michael Holdeman, M.D., Edwin H. Neill III, Ross B. Neill and Stern P. Neill; four grandchildren-in-law, Miguel Tellez, Madilynn Pilcher Neill, Michael A. Hebeisen and Dawn Brown Neill; and two great-grandsons, Louis Chavarria and Parker B. Neill. Preceded in death by parents, four brothers, and a sister. Pallbearers will be grandsons. While a resident of Monroe, he graduated from the then Northeast Junior College's first graduation class. He graduated from LSU Law School in 1936. He served in the Legislature as representative of Ouachita Parish. In 1946, he joined the legal staff of the Department of Highways serving as general counsel during the administration of Gov. Jimmy Davis. He was the recipient of many awards, including the Charles Wilson Burns award and Charles E. Dunbar award and a citation from the American Association of State Highway Officials. He served on the board of the Baton Rouge Girl Scout Council and helped in the early development of Camp Marydale. He was a member of Broadmoor Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Girl Scouts of America or to Boy Scouts of America.
