My Mother and best friend, Macel Puzey Thurmond, passed away peacefully in her sleep early on Saturday morning, July 28, 2001.
Mom was born on April 22, 1918, in Carman Gay, Alberta, Canada to William and Emma Puzey while her parents were there for the summer. She was raised in Magna, Utah, graduating from Cypress High School and Heneger Business College. Mom met my father, Robert (Bob) Clark Thurmond, in 1942 while Mom was serving as the secretary to the base commander at Stead Army Air Base just outside Reno, Nevada. Dad was transporting a fighter plane to England from the manufacturing plant in California, and made an emergency stop. The relationship grew and Dad managed to make continued "emergency" landings at Stead over the next few months. They were married at the Mapes Hotel in Reno, Nevada on September 6, 1942, and Dad was shortly thereafter stationed in England with the 8th Air Corp. Mom gave birth to me in 1943, and named me Jeffery Clark Thurmond. I was the only child and son, born during World War II when Mom came back to Salt Lake City in 1943. Mom and Dad were reunited in late 1945 when World War II ended. After the war, Mom became a secretary with the law firm of Pugsley, Hayes, Rampton and Watkiss in Salt Lake City. When Calvin L. Rampton became Governor of Utah, she moved into the State Capitol with him and was well known as the "Assistant Governor" starting in 1965. When Governor Rampton decided not to run again, she moved over to be Deputy Director of the Utah Travel Council until 1987 when she retired. Along the way, my Dad died in February, 1973, and Mom never remarried. Mom and Dad were not just married, but each other's best friends, active in the community, taking many trips together, and both acquiring and maintaining many lifetime friendships with others.
Surviving immediate family include my wife Marcia, and Mom's two grandchildren, Kerrie and Kristina. Mom had one brother, Garland, and Mom is also survived by her Brother's wife, Nell Puzey, and Nell's three children Bob, Bill and Paul Puzey. Mom is also survived by her "sister," Betty Thurmond who was the wife of my Father's brother, Andy Thurmond, and Betty's children, Jane, Andy, Jim and Christina -- Mom's "other daughter." Mom was always there for me, and when you look up "friend" and "Mother" in the dictionary, my Mom will be listed as the perfect example. A smile that would light up a room, the ability to always know what to do when I was growing up, always the perfect words of advice and encouragement, giving unfaltering love, she helped so many as well as me. She was loved and respected by all who knew her, and will be greatly missed but forever remembered with the deepest love in return.
The funeral service will be at Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple, on Tuesday afternoon, July 31 at 2 p.m. with a viewing one hour prior. A viewing will also be held at Larkin Mortuary, from 4-7 p.m. on Monday, July 30th. She will be buried along side her lifelong friend and husband, Bob, at Valley View Memorial Park in the Salt Lake valley.
