She graduated from Edward Little High School in 1937 and Bates College in 1942. After graduation from college, she worked as a medical technologist receiving training in Lewiston, Skowhegan and Sanford hospitals.
In 1956, she returned to work as a medical technologist at Central Maine General Hospital. She began teaching school as a substitute in the Auburn school system in 1961. In 1966, Claire joined her husband at Lisbon High School where she taught biology and life science until her retirement in 1980.
Claire was an avid skier and competed in downhill events during high school and college. She enjoyed sailing, contract bridge, sewing and knitting, and riding her motorcycle after her retirement. She and Wallace were ham radio operators and frequent ski patrollers at Sunday River and Lost Valley. Claire's greatest enjoyment in later life was having her family around her at her home on Taylor Pond.
She was a member of the West Auburn Congregational Church, the Auburn Art Club and Bates Key. She was a past president of the Lewiston-Auburn Girl Scout Council, and past treasurer of the Androscoggin Chapter of the March of Dimes.
She is survived by her son, Andrew P. White and his wife, Kausalya, of North Olmsted, Ohio; her daughter, Sue DeRoche and her husband, John, of Auburn; grandchildren, Caroline White Peinado (Matthew) of Auburn, Tobin White (Melissa) of Davis, Calif., Christopher White (Rachel) of Portland, Timothy DeRoche (Erin) of Auburn, and Jody DeRoche of Auburn; and great-grandchildren, Isabella Peinado, Sara Peinado, Zachary White, Benjamin White and Lucy DeRoche.
She is also survived by her sister, Helen G. Cook of Traverse City, Mich.; and many nieces and nephews.
