John was the son of Howard A. and Bertha L. (Small) Hersberger and was named for his paternal grandfather. He graduated from Lapel High School in 1914 and was a farmer in Stony Creek Township. On September 22, 1917 he married Halssie Berniece Williamson. He was twice elected as a Township Trustee and was a County Commissioner of the South District.
He was a charter member of the Lapel Lions Club, the Farm Bureau, and a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church. He and Bernice had two sons and one daughter.
