Edward Bailey was elected the first Democratic senator from Jefferson county. Honorable, efficient and discreet, he was re-elected senator in the years 1889, 1895, 1897, 1903, and 1905. In 1921 he was a member of the House of Representatives which concluded his services at the capitol. In 1910, while acting as mayor of Monticello, he was elected to the board of county commissioners and in the following year he began his work for the county, which lasted till 1913.
