Karl W. J. Kawalle, 64, of 2419 South Tenth St., founder of a copper boiler
works which he operated for nearly 30 years and a lifelong resident of the
city, died Friday morning at the Manitowoc Memorial Hospital following a
lingering illness.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the First German Evangelical
Lutheran Church, of which he was a member. The Rev. L. H. Koeninger will
officiate and interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
Mr. Kawalle was born here in 1889 and in 1913 married Miss Ida Kluth. Twenty-
nine years ago he founded the Manitowoc Copper Boiler and Heater Works at a
plant located at 522 Jay St. The special boiler turned out by Mr. Kawalle was
unusual in that it was welded with bronze with a lower melting point than copper
and resulted in a one piece job.
Most of the product of the works was shipped to plumbing supply houses in the
east.
Mr. Kawalle for many years was a member of the male chorus of the Lutheran
congregation. He was a director of the Manitowoc Evening Times, when that daily
was published and at present was a director of the Manitowoc Memorial Hospital.
Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Elmer Paulmann and Mrs. Armin Roekle
of Manitowoc; son, Arthur, of Manitowoc; three brothers, Richard and Edward of
Chicago, Hugo of Racine; two sisters, Mrs. Edward Schreihart and Miss Ottilie
Kawalle of Manitowoc; and ten grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Urbanek and Schlei Funeral Home after Sunday noon. The
casket will be moved to the church at 10 a.m. Monday.
