MARGARET R. HEFFERNAN

Mrs. Margaret Reuter Heffernan, age 93, of 816 N. 11th St., Manitowoc, died
Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002 at her home.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian
Church with the Rev. William B. Plank officiating. Burial in Evergreen Cemetery
will be at a later date.
The former Margaret Joanna Reuter was born March 18, 1908 in Madison, daughter
of Rudolf F. and Elsie Holmes Reuter. She was a graduate of Verona High School,
Verona, and the University of Wisconsin School of Journalism in Madison. Her
graduate studies were at the University of Washington School of Education,
Seattle, and at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
She was married to Gordon W. Heffernan Dec. 31, 1941 in St. Louis, Mo., and they
lived in New York, Alabama and Washington while he served as a lieutenant
commander in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He preceded her in death Nov. 1,
1982.
Before her marraige, Mrs. Heffernan taught journalism and English in high schools
in Kent, Wash., and Monroe, Wis. She joined the faculty of Lincoln High School,
Manitowoc, in 1936. At Lincoln, in addition to teaching English and journalism,
she was supervisor of Tower Publications, including the Flambeau, the school year
book; the Manitou, literary magazine; and the Hi-Tower Flashes, the school
newspaper. The publications she supervised were consistent winners of Pacemaker
and All-American awards from the National Scholastic Press Association during her
seven-year tenure at Lincoln.
The Heffernans returned to Manitowoc afte the war. In 1959, Mrs. Heffernan became
a part-time instructor with the UW-Extension in Manitowoc. In 1962, when the UW-
Center, Manitowoc, opened, she joined the faculty there as an instructor in
English, and for five of her 14 years in the UW-System in Manitowoc, was also
the public information specialist at the Center.
Mrs. Heffernan is survived by a son: John R. Heffernan of Dallas; a daughter:
Margaret Mary Heffernan of Gaithersburg, Md.; and two grandchildren: Gordon
Franklin Heffernan of Dallas; and Joanna Cooper Heffernan of Saddle River, N.J.
Her only sister, Dorothy Reuter Laughlin of Madison, died in 1973.
Mrs. Heffernan was a 50-year member fot he First Presbyterian Church in Manitowoc,
where she served as a deaconess. She was a member of the Wisconsin Maritime Museum,
the Rahr-West Art Museum, the Manitowoc Garden Study Club and Chapter J of the
PEO Sisterhood. She was formerly a member of several state and national education
organizations.
Her creative hobbies included collecting antiques and interior decorating. She
was the auther of "They Call Me Fredericka," a story of a century of growing up.
Friends may call at the First Presbyterian Church from 9l30 a.m. Wednesday until
the time of the service at 11 a.m. Memorials maybe made to the Wisconsin Maritime
Mueseum, the Rahr-West Art Museum or the First Presbyterian Church.
The Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 628 N. Water St.,
Manitowoc, is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
Mrs. Heffernan was deeply admired by her students and loved by her family.
