Gordon William Heffernan, 81, of 816 N. 11th St,. Manitowoc, died Monday
afternoon, Nov. 1, 1962, at Holy Family Hospital.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Parkside Funeral Home.
The service will be conducted by the Rev. William Plank and Deacon William
Klein.
Mr. Heffernan was born Sept. 24, 1901, in Manitowoc, son of the late Frnak and
Rosa Jorsch Heffernan. He was one of four children, Francis, Marguerite Scheuer
and Helen Goodrich, all deceased.
Dec. 31, 1941, Mr. Heffernan married Margaret Reuter in St. Louis, Mo. She
survives with a daughter, Margaret Mary Heffernan of Washington, D.C.; son and
daughter-in-law, John Reuter Heffernan and Katie Lightfoot Heffernan of Dallas,
Texas; grandson, Gordon F.R. Heffernan; granddaughter, Joanna Cooper Heffernan;
step-grandson, Zachariah Perez; and nieces and nephews.
Mr. Heffernan was graduated from Lincoln High Schol, Manitowoc, in 1919. He
received his bachelor of science degree from Oshkosh Normal School (now the
University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh) and his master of arts degree from Northwestern
University.
He taught at Kentukcy Military Institute in St. Matthew, Ky., in 1923-1924. He
joined the Manitowoc Public School System in 1924 teaching at the old Madison
School on Park Street, and moved to Woodrow Wilson Junior High School when it was
built in 1931. In 1946 after returning from active military duty with the U.S.
Navy, he taught at Washington Junior High School before joining the staff at
Lincoln High Schol in 1949 here he taught electronics until retiring in 1967.
As an officer in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1946, he served in Sampson, N.Y,
aboard the USS Bryant in the North Atlantic; Auburn, Ill.; at the Radio School,
Alabama Polytechnic Institute; Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Bremerton, Wash.; and
Navy Annex, Washington, D.C.
He served 20 years in the Naval Reserve, retiring with the rank of commander. He
was a member of the Reserve Surface Division in Sheboygan.
In 1967, Mr. Heffernan started a third career when he as appointed director of
Civil Defense by Manitowoc Mayor Robert Rand. He retired from this position in
1980.
In 1965 Mr. Heffernan was honored as an outstanding representative of the science
and mathematics techers of Wisconsin receiving a citation from the Wisconsin Society
of Professional Engineers.
Well known as an amateur radio operator, he acquired his first license from the
FCC at age 15, and in 1968, qualified for the highest of five licenses now granted
by the FCC, the Amateur Extra Class.
He was a past director of the Manitowoc Maritime Museum; life member of the Mancorad
Radio Club; state and national educational associations; Manitowoc County Historical
Society; American Legion, and the Rahr West Museum.
Visitation at Parkside Funeral Home will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from
8:30 a.m. Thursday until the time of service. The family requests that memorials be
made to the Manitowoc Maritime Museum and the Rahr West Museum.
