TUPELO – Cornelius Adams, 88, died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2012, at North Mississippi Medical Center. He was born on Aug. 2, 1932, in Casey, Ky., to Jim and Addie Adams. He graduated from George Washington High School. Before graduating from Tennessee State University in 1952, he enlisted in the United States Army from 1943-1946 serving in World War II. During his life, he held numerous positions. He worked for the United States Post Office in Chicago, taught history in Chicago, taught mathematics and coached basketball in Baldwyn and worked for Lift Inc in Tupelo for 22 years as an Equal Opportunity Officer and Head Start director. Upon retiring from Lift Inc., he worked as the owner/operator of Haven Acres Grocery Store. He was a lifetime member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Theta Iota Chapter, Henry Hampton Elks Lodge 782, Exalted Ruler, the American Legion Post 49, St. Joseph Lodge 202A of Saltillo and Traveling Consistory 119.

Services will be at 11 a.m. today at Spring Hill M.B. Church with the Rev. Clarence E. Smith officiating. N.L. Jones Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Lillie Faye Shelley Adams; one daughter, Norphesia G. Adams (Anthony Williams); two grandchildren, Bryce Reid Adams-Williams and Bailey Addyson Adams-Williams; two sisters, Eula Brame and Marie Adams; two sisters-in-law, Jewel Adams and Minnie Adams; and a host of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Mell Hayes and Canary Croft; and three brothers, Herman, Jimmie and Cassidy.
