John E. Jacobsen age 72, of Mitchell died Monday, August 6, 2012 at Firesteel Healthcare Center after battling a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Friday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Visitation will be 6 to 8 PM Thursday at the Will Funeral Chapel with a prayer service at 7:00 PM. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery with military rites.
John was born to Lucille (McGraw) and Harvey Jacobsen on February 16, 1940. He grew up on a farm near Letcher, SD. He graduated from Letcher High School in 1958 where he was involved in many activities such as football, basketball, and track. John attended South Dakota State University and graduated in 1963 with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture Economics. He worked for 35 years and 9 months as an appraiser for South Dakota Department of Transportation and residential Real Estate. He was also in the Air Force National Guard. On June 10, 1967 he married Joan Gunnare at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mitchell. John and Joan lived and raised 6 children in Mitchell and have been married for 45 years.
John enjoyed spending time with his family and loved them very much. He was an avid sports fan of the Jackrabbits, Twins, Vikings, and Mitchell Kernels. He enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren play various sports. His favorite hobbies were taking pictures, hunting pheasants, listening to sports on the radio, and attending church on Sundays. He also took pride in his special gift of penmanship. John was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church and was also a part of the Mitchell Booster Club while his children were in school.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife Joan, Mitchell, SD; 4 sons and 2 daughters, Dean (Sharon) Jacobsen, Viborg, SD; Darin (Susie) Jacobsen, Mitchell, SD; Marty (Tina) Jacobsen, Sioux Falls, SD; Marcy (Austin) Gregg, Sioux Falls, SD; Mark (Lindsay) Jacobsen, Sioux Falls, SD; Jackie (Jason) Helling, Omaha, NE., 7 grandchildren; Cory, Trevor, Isaiah, Carter, Grady, Jurzee, Quinn, and one on the way; mother Lucille Jacobsen, Sioux Falls, SD; 3 Brothers and 1 sister, Kenny (Shirley) Jacobsen, Le Mars, IA; Nancy (Don) Lewis, Sioux Falls, SD; Dennis (Deb) Jacobsen, Letcher, SD; Robert (Becky) Jacobsen, Sioux Falls, SD; many nephew and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his father, Harvey Jacobsen; mother and father in law, Mary Helen and Carl Gunnare; grandparents, several aunts and uncles.
