Winthrop Grant Bushnell graduated from Yale with an A. B. in 1888 and was editor of Yale News. He began a career in journalism and was an editor for the New Haven Journal and Courier for a brief time. He then switched his interests and retained a position with the Edison Company of New York City. He continued his career with the General Electric Company and in 1906, he resigned his position to develop public utilities. He was owner of New Medford Power company and later sold it to the Connecticut Railway and Lighting Co. With partners, he became involved in the development of street lighting and power companies in New England and the midwest; the largest was the Connecticut Power Co., of which he was vice president.

He was a member of Center Church, New Haven. In 1911, he married Harriet Elizabeth Scofield, daughter of Elizabeth C. (Libbie) and Levi Tucker Scofield of Cleveland. They had two daughters: Elizabeth, born April 22, 1912, and Ann Cornelia, born January 6, 1918.
