Professional Football Player, Coach. For five seasons (1938 to 1942), he played at the quarterback, tailback and halfback positions in the National Football League with the Green Bay Packers. He attended Sam Houston High School in Texas and played collegiate football at Purdue. During his years with the later, he excelled at the running back, quarterback and punter positions as he achieved All-American honors. Selected by the Green Bay Packers as the number 7 overall pick during the 1938 NFL Draft, he totaled 54 career regular season games. Isbell experienced an NFL Championship with the Packers in 1939 and individually distinguished himself, when he achieved Pro-Bowl honors four-times and All-Pro status once. In addition, he led the NFL twice in passing yardage (1,479 in 1941 and 2,021 in 1942) and twice in touchdown passes (15 in 1941 and 24 in 1942). After retiring as a player, he served as head coach of the Baltimore Colts of the All-America Football Conference (1947 to 1949) and briefly head coach of the Chicago Cardinals. He went on to serve as a backfield coach with the Dallas Texans (1952) and LSU (1953). Isbell formerly held the NFL record for consecutive games in which he threw a touchdown pass with 23 from 1940 until 1942. He was inducted into the National College Football Hall of Fame in 1967.
